The Lenovo ThinkPad L490 is the direct successor to the L480 — same value ThinkPad positioning, same 13.9-inch chassis philosophy, but with the slightly newer 8th-generation Whiskey Lake refresh of the i5 platform. For buyers who want a more recent L-series at a still-accessible price, this is the natural pick over the L480.
What changed between L480 and L490
Lenovo refined rather than replaced the L-series between these generations. The L490 inherited a slightly improved chassis, the more recent i5 from the same Whiskey Lake family, and the kind of incremental fixes that came from a year of customer feedback. The ThinkPad keyboard is unchanged in quality — still one of the best reasons to choose this line. The platform handles standard office tasks, document workflows, browser-heavy work and video calls without strain.

The L490 ships with 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB of RAM, and storage from 256 GB SSD up to 2 TB SSD. All three cosmetic grades are offered: Excellent, Good and Fair. Keyboard layouts in DE, BE, NL, UK, FR, IT, ES, PT, SE, DK and other common European layouts are available on request, which is particularly relevant for buyers replacing an L480 with the same keyboard layout the user already knows.
